From dollhouses to set design

June 16th, 2012

The next time you see a child playing with a dollhouse, you could be watching a theatre set designer in the making.

Certainly that’s the inspiration for Kate Fester, a 15 year old Houston student who was a finalist in the state University Interscholastic League set design competition.

“I’ve had a dollhouse since I can’t remember,” Kate told the Houston Chronicle, explaining where her love of creating miniature sets originated.

It’s a skill which she has used to the full in crafting a miniature set design for Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.

Kate made her model using  foam, air-dried clay, balsa wood, tissue paper, living vine and Christmas lights.  She also put part of a reading light into a ping-pong ball to depict a moon.
